Rain Gardeners Trailer Video

Description
Rain Gardeners consists of 4 second-year students from CMU ETC. Working with our client, The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, we are creating a fun and intuitive digital tool using AR technology for educators at Lincoln School who wants to educate 3-5 grade students about the ecology of a rain garden.

The goal is to help students have a better understanding of how rain gardens work, how plants benefit from flooding and the ecosystem by making an AR experience on tablets. This is a project that supports and enhances the educators’ teaching experience.
In-door Card Game
The in-door experience consists of a map based card scanning game. Students can hold the tablet and scan cards. Each card belongs to a category and also has different virtual model representations.

Students need to use their knowledge about rain gardens to place cards in the correct place on the map. Also, combining two cards will have animation effects to show how pollinators can be attracted by flowers.

On-site Experience
On-site experience is a location-based sign scanning experience. We prepared three signs at the rain garden representing three seasons. Students will stand at different spots to scan the image sign then the virtual look of the rain garden will be shown on their screen.

Designate spot design

Students will first hold the tablet at designate spot to scan the image. After scanning, the virtual rain garden will show on the screen and students can interact with the rain garden by following the instructions.

Beginning stage of the on-site experience

Students can swipe to rotate, pinch to change the scale so that they can explore the rain garden in different seasons. For each season, students can also collect items in the scene. Those collectable items are complementary to their knowledge of rain gardens.
